Makarska, Croatia

After a few hours' drive up the coast to the North (including a 7-mile jaunt through Bosnia) we arrived in Makarska, Croatia which is a sleepy beach town with a quaint promenade that is loaded with cafes that run the length of the beach.  We got changed and immediately made our way to the beach for sunning (Sue) and swimming (me).  Like other places in Croatia, the beaches are mostly small pebbles, but the water is warm and crystal blue which makes up for the need to endure severe foot pain on the walk from the beach to the sea.  We rented some chairs and spent the afternoon lounging by the sea.  Delightful!

This may sound odd, but a highlight of our time in Makarska was the discovery of a traditional Greek salad at one of the cafes on the promenade right outside our hotel.  It was quite possibly one of the best things I have eaten in years.  It was so good that we ate it every day.

While walking the promenade on our first night in Makarska, we decided to book a boat trip for the next day to the islands of Hvar and Brac.  Little did we know that this would lead to the second highlight of our time in Makarska - meeting Vito the Serbian!  While on board the boat we had the pleasure of meeting Vito the 70-year-old body guard, masseur, tarot card reader who also moonlights as a day laborer on the tourists boats to the islands.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Enjoy the photo below to match a persona to the description.  He did give us his personal contact information so we could "stay in touch" but somehow that fell overboard on the return portion of the trip.

While we didn't know it when we booked our trip, we selected the boat that turned into a free-for-all dance party during the return portion of the journey!  It was fantastic.  As we pulled into port people were lining up to take photos of us.  We had music blaring, passengers thumping and confused land dwellers starring at us with amazement.  It was quite a day.

Upon returning to land we enjoyed another Greek salad with some cocktails and a lovely sunset during our last night in Makarska.
